What have the artists been up to?

The artists have been very busy this winter and have made a lot of wonderful projects.  We had a lot of snow days to contend with, so a few classes are a little behind the others, but that's okay! Spring is just around the corner and the artists are busy making spring inspired artwork!

The Kinders have been working on learning how to mix colors.  We read the book, "Mouse Paint", by Ellen Stoll Walsh and then discovered what happens when the Primary colors mix up by using Crayola Clay Magic.  The Kinders then created these super cute mice:

While the first grade artists learned about fish, their environment, and making patterns:

Our second grade artists have recently finished up some marvelous self-portraits like these:

The third grade artists have been working on mixed up animals inspired by the book, "Call Me Gorgeous" by Giles and Alexandra Milton as well as the interactive website, http://www.buildyourwildself.com/. These artists also discovered Ohio born artist, Jim Dine, and was inspired by his series of heart artworks.  They are currently learning about famous artist, Vincent van Gogh, and creating beautiful watercolor and oil pastel pieces inspired by his painting, "Sunflowers".

The fourth grade artists recently learned about artist Faith Ringgold, creating memory quilts inspired by her book, "Tar Beach".  They also discovered artist Keith Haring (http://www.haringkids.com/) and created some collaged characters in motion.  The fourth grade artists are currently learning about different elements of art including line, color, space, and value.

The fifth grade artists recently investigated the process of printmaking, looking at the artwork of Albrecht Durer.  The fifth grade art show and music program has been moved to the end of May--which means we can create many more beautiful works of art to show off!  One upcoming project to look out for is our bottlecap project!! You all have been saving up bottle caps and bringing them in all year--Thank you! The fifth graders will be creating a special project with these soon!

Also, keep bringing in those bottlecaps!! There is another special bottlecap project coming up soon that you may have the oppurtunity to participate in! Keep your ears open for more news pertaining to this special project that will be coming up this May!

The 8th graders are currently working on projects based on COMPASSION. It seems the idea of compassion is something that is desperately needed right now.  The students will be exploring this theme further, but they are currently getting to know other students in the class that they do not usually hang out with.  The students are to create a portrait of their new friend that accurately describes this person.
Next week will be our last week together and all artwork will be coming home after the students choose their favorite pieces for the upcoming art show (April 29 & 30) !!
