Long overdue Art update!

Art is off to a great start at both Rolling Hills and SVMS!

What's happening at Rolling Hills?

Kindergarten:
The kinder artists have been learning so much so far this year.  They began the year with learning about different types of lines and they learned the primary colors!  After that the artists got to learn about wax resist and how to draw all kinds of different shapes! When they finished their shape crayon drawings they got to watercolor-- and did a wonderful job using the watercolors!

1st grade:
The first grade artists have been busy too!  They just finished up making some chalk pastel wild things, and are gearing up for a fall collage (during which they will get to use paint!).  These artists finished some great self-portrait collages which you can check out in our Artsonia gallery!

2nd grade:
These artists got to work with chalk pastels too and created some beautiful fall trees! Then they read the book "Go Away Big Green Monster!" by Ed Emberely, and created their own collage monsters. Look for both of these projects in Artsonia soon!

3rd grade:
The third grade artists learned different ways to cut and fold paper and created their own collaged masks.  They looked at masks from different cultures and discussed the different purposes of masks.  The artists were challenged to come up with a purpose for their own masks and create them using only paper.  These artists are now moving onto a painting project where they are exploring warm and cool colors and learning to weave.

4th grade:
The fourth grade artists are just finishing up a challenging colorwheel painting.  They learned all about the color wheel and were only given the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue) and had to mix the secondary and tertiary colors.  For our next project the 3rd graders will be discovering different shapes of leaves as well as positive and negative space.

5th grade:
Our 5th grade artists are finishing up a project where they discovered part of the Mexican culture.  The artists learned about the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead, and created their own sugar skulls.  These were complete using a variety of materials including oil pastel and paint.  Their first project of the year explored radial design.
*Please note that the fifth graders will not be bringing their projects home for a while... we are saving them at school so they can choose their favorite pieces for our annual art show in the Spring!

What about SVMS?

Our 7th and 8th graders are getting ready to wrap up the quarter at the end of next week.
Both grades will be bringing home all their projects at once on Thursday or Friday.  They will be keeping one project here to be displayed at our 3rd Annual Art Show this Spring.

Art Club has been off to a great start so far! I have a great bunch of kids this year, and all are doing a fantastic job.  We have already done some beautiful silk paintings, created non-objective clay sculptures inspired by the work of Dale Chihuly, and are now working on some interesting camouflage paintings inspired by artist Liu Bolin.

Welcome Back!!

It's that time of year again!  The first day of school is just around the corner!  I am looking forward to another fantastic year of art at RH and SVMS!  As you can see, we have a new art site.  This should be much easier to navigate for everyone.

RH NEWS:
Once again we will be using the Artsonia website for Rolling Hills artwork.  Please remember to check in every so often and see the awesome work of our very talented artists!  Don't forget, if you choose to buy an object with your child's artwork on it, the RH Art Dept. receives 15% back so we can better our art program!

I am also excited to announce that I will be teaching Kindergarten this year!! Very excited to work with the kinders and show off their talents as well!

SVMS NEWS:
Last year was my first year to implement an after-school art club, and it was fantastic! Students in grades 6-8, don't forget to fill out your permission slip and return to Mrs. Watkins by FRIDAY AUGUST 27!  Then listen to announcements for the first meeting date!
